What is an eating disorder?

Eating disorders are multi-faceted and are not primarily about food. Food behavior serves as a maladaptive coping mechanism for the pressure, stress, or conflict in one's life. An eating disorder is an illness that involves physiological changes associated with but not limited to:

  • Under eating
  • Binge eating
  • Purging
  • Laxative/diuretic use
  • Diet pills/stimulant use
  • Isolated eating
  • Excessive exercising
  • Weight fluctuation

Individuals with this illness often have a distorted perception of his or her body.
