Senior Psychiatry Program

Older adults have special physical, social and emotional needs. When faced with issues of aging, family members search for a place to obtain help for their loved ones. The senior services unit at Loma Linda University Behavioral Medicine Center is a place they can turn to for a specialized program that meets the unique needs of the geriatric population with dignity and compassion.

The number of seniors is rapidly growing in America, and few hospitals currently exist which serve this unique population. Our unit offers whole-person care with an emphasis on meeting an individual’s need for independence. We offer a therapeutic setting for individuals ages 55 and up that takes into account the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of the elderly patient population.

Those in need of our services often experience:

  • Depression and thoughts of suicide
  • Racing thoughts
  • Anxiety and stress
  • Substance abuse
  • A loss of the ability to care for themselves
  • Diminished sensory skills
  • Changes in memory and thinking
  • Possible dementia
  • Co-occurring physical concerns with emotional problems
  • Abuse or neglect
  • Difficulty with the management of medications
  • Forgetfulness
  • Sudden or unexplained behavior outbursts
  • Homelessness
  • Medical complications

Our team also assists patients with the following goals:

  • Improved mood and psychiatric stabilization
  • A streamlined medication regime
  • Maximized self-care
  • Diminished sense of anxiety
  • A clear plan of care after hospitalization

Program Features

Our program is designed to meet the psychiatric and medical needs of the older patient who requires hospitalization. Treatment consists of assessment and diagnosis, management of symptoms, caregiver and family education, a structured therapeutic environment and aftercare planning.

Family Involvement

We encourage all family members, spouses or other close caregivers to visit their loved one here, and we also ask for family input regarding the patient’s behavior, emotions and physical concerns. Family and caregiver involvement is also encountered through meetings with the doctors, conferring with the social worker and assisting with discharge planning.
